Optional features
The optional modules and AI tools, what each one does, and who switches it on.
- Practice admins
Every practice has the signposting cards, clinical review, the appointments directory, highlights and buttons. The features below are optional. The Signposting Toolkit team switches each one on or off for a practice. To change what your practice has, email contact@signpostingtool.co.uk.
Seeing what your practice has
Practice admins can see the practice’s features in:
☰ MenuPractice settingsModule accessThe page has two sections. Core modules are practice-wide. AI & advanced features shows each AI tool as Available or Off for the practice, then a User-level access table for switching tools on or off for individual staff. The practice-wide switches can only be changed by the Signposting Toolkit team.
The one-card-for-all-ages option, feedback surveys and the sample feedback pilot aren’t listed on Module access. You can tell your practice has one card for all ages because the age filter and age badges aren’t shown.
In the menu (☰), a module your practice doesn’t have is greyed out and marked Not enabled.

Switching AI tools on or off for a person
Improved wording and suggested questions can be switched off, or back on, for individual staff once they are on for your practice. Everyone gets the practice setting until an admin changes it for them.
- Open ☰ MenuPractice settingsModule access
- In User-level access, find the person and use the switch for the tool. A locked icon means the tool is off for the whole practice.
- To give a tool to everyone at once, choose it from Enable for all users…
Things to know:
- A person’s setting isn’t tied to one practice. Changing it at one practice changes it everywhere they work.
- The AI tools check whether the feature is on at the person’s default practice. If someone sees the AI buttons at one practice but gets an access error, check the feature at their default practice. See Roles and permissions.
- The table also shows a switch for AI customisation. AI customisation is controlled for the whole practice, so switching it off for one person doesn’t stop them using it. Practice admins are the only staff who can run it.
Every other feature applies to the whole practice.
Things your practice sets up itself
These aren’t switched on by the Signposting Toolkit team. Practice admins set them up:
- Quick access buttons: up to six shortcuts under the high-risk buttons. They start with a set of common symptoms, which you can change or switch off. See Highlights and buttons.
- Custom high-risk buttons, highlight rules and the built-in highlights and image icons switches: see Highlights and buttons.
- The appointments directory: always available; fill it in if it helps your team. See Appointments directory.
